Winter Patio Furniture Care | Articles Fancy

Swimming pool closure marks the end of the swim season but you still might have the opportunity to enjoy your deck and patio area for a few weeks longer. Once the winter really settles in you will want to take some steps to protect your patio furniture from Mother Nature. The use of patio furniture covers is one way to care for the furniture so that it is still usable the following season. Having an indoor storage area is one great way to protect your furniture but sometimes you simply don?t have the room, especially if you have a lot of furniture to take care of. While there are some styles of furniture that can survive the elements, it is still a great idea to at least put the furniture off to the side of the deck and secure it so it doesn?t get blown away or blown into the swimming pool in the midst of a storm.

Being exposed to the harsh winter elements can cause your patio furniture to prematurely age. Regardless of whether you?ve spent a lot of money on your furniture or whether you?ve invested a little you want to get as much use out of the furniture for as many years as possible. If you?re not the type to take care of the furniture or if you simply don?t have storage space, be diligent in the use of patio furniture covers or purchase heavy wooden or aluminum furniture that is better able to withstand winter?s fury. Be advised though that wooden furniture is prone to water damage if exposed to the water and snow that winter brings with it.

Two types of furniture that will likely not survive winter are wicker and steel framed furniture. Wicker will expand and contract and also might not easily survive the heavy weight of snow. Steel furniture is prone to rusting and damage. If you simply don?t have an area in which to store the furniture you will want to pick up patio furniture covers, put them on and check throughout the winter season to make certain it stays firmly in place even when the winds start blowing.

If your furniture gets damaged it can usually be refurbished and repainted. Simply sand off cracked or peeling paint and sand away rust. Once you?re done you can apply a new coat of stain and varnish your wooden furniture or apply a spray coating of a rust proof paint on the metal furniture to it look brand new. Consider adding new cushion covers to give your furniture a face lift for the season.

Speaking of accessories, when you?re taking care of your patio furniture for the winter, don?t forget to take care of the cushions, side tables, umbrellas and other outdoor accessories.
