Old Dominion University allows gay, lesbian students to live together

NORFOLK, Va.?Old Dominion University will allow gay, lesbian, bi-sexual and transgendered students to live together in an effort to help them learn better says the school.?

But some students wonder if it will do more harm than good.

The GLBT student community will have its own set of dorm rooms.

"I don't think it's a good concept, just singling them out and sticking them all together,? says Sally, a junior at the university.

It's called "living learning communities,? which puts groups of people together with the same goals and interests.? For example, students learning careers in engineering, health professionals, as well as women studying science and engineering are part of the living learning community concept.

"Just because you're gay it's not gonna make you have things in common with them, same as anybody else,? says Sally.

The GLBT students and their supporters had to go through an application process to be eligible for this.? They're given a set of 9 dorm rooms inside of a residence hall with other students.

During a time when the GLBT lifestyle is becoming more acceptable, NewsChannel 3 asked ODU? if this new concept will cause problems with gay students living openly with other students.

"Living on a floor with people who may not be accepting of that, you take that into consideration? Housing is open to everyone who applies. This isn?t going to change that," says Ellen Neufeldt of student engagement.

But she says they did research to make sure they are in areas that are away from harassment, even though some students don't feel like it will be a benefit.

"Everybody knows exactly who you are. It's just calling yourself out,? says Jourdan, a freshman at the university.?
