Washington homicide suspect apprehended in Kalispell

KALISPELL, Mont. -

Pend Oreille County Sheriff Alan Botzheim has confirmed for KCFW that a 24-year-old man wanted in connection with his mother?s apparent stabbing death has been apprehended in Kalispell. Botzheim says Matthew J. Swancara was arrested in Kalispell Monday without incident.

The Pend Oreille County Sheriff?s Office had responded to a domestic violence call in Washington's Elk area on Sunday night, and found the suspect?s mother, 56-year-old Sally Swancara, dead of apparent stab wounds. Deputies say Matthew Swancara had fled the area before they got to the scene.

In a phone interview with KCFW, Pend Oreille County Sheriff Alan Botzheim said his department knew that Swancara would possibly try to go to Montana, because he has ties to the area. Montana authorities were alerted to the possibility of the suspect traveling in the state.

Botzheim says a man reportedly encountered Swancara as he was hitchhiking, and called the authorities. Botzheim expressed thanks for the Kalispell Police Department for helping to apprehend the suspect.?
