Watsonville Suspect Nabbed Crossing U.S./Mexico Border

WATSONVILLE, Calif.-?U.S. Border Patrol agents?nabbed?a suspect wanted for attempted murder in a shooting outside a Watsonville home during a New Year's Eve party.

Watsonville police said the?suspect, Jose Vargas, was arrested yesterday for shooting the 24-year-old victim multiple times at the party on Southern Circle. Police said Vargas was not invited to the party, but went with his girlfriend,?Margarita Ruiz.?Just before midnight, police said Vargas shot the victim for unknown reasons and ran away. The victim?is in stable condition. Ruiz was arrested for an accessory to the shooting after she refused to provide information.

Detectives notified the U.S. Border Patrol in case Vargas tried returning to Mexico. Police said agents arrested Vargas yesterday as he was trying to re-enter the United States from Mexico at the Winterhaven port-of-entry near Yuma, Arizona. Vargas will be extradited back to Santa Cruz County to face charges of attempted murder.
