Romney says it's a neck-and-neck race

(AP) ? Mitt Romney says the South Carolina race is neck and neck between him and rival Newt Gingrich.

The former Massachusetts governor's comment to reporters was an acknowledgement of what polls show: that Romney has slid in the past week as he's faced questions about his wealth and that Gingrich has risen as he's worked to consolidate conservative support behind his candidacy.

Romney commented Friday one day after a contentious debate and as he traveled the state to make last-ditch appeals to voters four years after he abandoned South Carolina when it was clear he would lose big during his first run for the presidency.

South Carolina's primary is Saturday.
