North Charleston mayor does ad for car dealer

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. --?

North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey is helping a Volkswagen dealer in his city sell cars.

The Charleston Post and Courier reports ( http://bit.ly/tBcMR5) that Summey is an unpaid pitchman for Stokes Volkswagen, saying the business is a good corporate citizen and its employees go above and beyond a customer's expectations.

Summey says he would do this for any business in good standing in North Charleston because they are taxpayers and he wants to keep business in his town.

But College of Charleston communications professor Chris Lamb told the newspaper it shows bad judgment for the mayor to be endorsing a specific business.

Summey's promotion does not violate state ethics rules because he was not paid, and no one names Stokes is a listed as a donor to Summey's campaigns.
