I don't care about DVD support (I haven't watched a DVD for years), and I never used Media Center. I'm not aware of reduced customisation; I think the look of the Windows 8 desktop is nice and minimalist, and it uses less? resources.
I'm not saying you shouldn't value those things, I'm just saying that I don't, so I'm not losing anything. I definitely wouldn't have upgraded if I didn't get the $15 deal though, not even for the $40 upgrade price.
Now that Sinofsky's gone, W8 might improve...
