Gaming Roundup: Steam-ing Ahead with Linux
In what may turn out to be one of the biggest steps forward for Linux in recent history, Valve has launched a beta version of Steam for Linux, along with a catalogue of over two dozen games currently available for the open-source OS, headlined by Team Fortress 2 and Serious Sam 3. Several months ago, Valve head Gabe Newell made the development of this project known, portraying it as both a preemptive and precautionary move to guard Steam against the potentially closed platform of Windows 8. This week, Steam for Linux became a reality.
The Steam for Linux beta is currently optimized for the Ubuntu 12.04 OS, as the vast majority of beta participants reported using this particular Linux distribution. However, other popular distros will be supported in the future, based on a priority list determined by user feedback. Currently, the beta is reserved for only those applicants who already opted-in, but the pool of users will gradually expand, culminating in the eventual release of a stable build supporting a number of different distros to all Steam users later on down the road.
What does this mean for Linux? Possibly nothing, but it could also mean a noticeable spike in usage?after all, the absence of mainstream software has previously been a significant hindrance to mainstream adoption of the OS (although, in fairness, this is also a selling point for many current Linux users). In other gaming news this week, a new GTA V?trailer is just around the corner, you?ll soon be able to RIDE A FREAKING DRAGON in Skyrim, a Diablo III expansion is announced, and a promising dinosaur game finally launches.
- A new GTA V trailer is coming on November 14, courtesy of Rockstar?hopefully with some gameplay footage for us to sink our teeth into.
- The Skyrim: Dragonborn DLC is the Skyrim DLC we?ve all been waiting for. Why? Three words. Riding. Freaking. Dragons. With that said, we sure hope dragon-riding is less glitchy than horse-riding.
- Despite some framerate issues and the lack of a narrative, Primal Carnage sounds like it might be the most fun man vs dinosaur game to come around since Turok. We?re looking forward to giving it a whirl.
- Ubisoft tells us that their groundbreaking sci-fi open-world shooter, Watch Dogs, will launch in 2013. You may recall the trailer causing a few jaws to drop at this past E3.
