Fit After 50 ? baby boomer program on importance of staying healthy ...

?
BoomerCaf? doesn?t endorse any particular suggestions about how to keep looking and acting as young as we feel. But sometimes we come across something that just might work. That?s why we?re publishing this little piece by Paul Rockar. He sounds like an expert on Boomers Staying Fit After 50.

Paul Rockar

As president of the American Physical Therapy Association, and a baby boomer, I understand the importance of staying fit and active as we age. For 30 years, I have worked with patients to help them improve and restore mobility, an essential component of the active and healthy lifestyle many of us often take for granted. I have seen the many benefits of physical therapist treatment, including helping patients eliminate pain and regain mobility and control of their lives, in many cases without expensive and painful surgery or long-term use of prescription medications.

I am proud to be a part of a generation that is considered more tech-savvy and highly-educated than any previous generation. Yet, despite this, some studies, including one out of Harvard titled ?Trends in Obesity and Arthritis Among Baby Boomers and Their Predecessors,? show that many boomers are actually overweight or obese, placing us at greater risk for chronic health conditions such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers.

It is common to lose flexibility, strength, and balance as we age, but those aspects of normal aging don?t have to be barriers to fitness. The Physical Therapy Association launched its ?Fit After 50? campaign to educate people 50 and older about the importance of staying fit and active. We want boomers to know it?s possible, with the help and guidance of a licensed physical therapist, to get in shape, stay in shape, and remain healthy and active, while avoiding injury.

Physical therapists take an individual approach to your health, taking into account any pre-existing conditions to tailor a plan that is specific to your needs. As experts in restoring and improving motion in people?s lives, physical therapists will work with you to make you the best you can be, at any age.
