GRAND HAVEN, Mich., Aug. 22, 2012?Donald Miller, representative from the Michigan State Attorney?s office, will present an update on common scams initiated over the phone, by mail and e-mail and how citizens can stay safe on Tuesday, September 11, at 1 p.m. in the Sanctuary at United Methodist Church of the Dunes.? The church is located at 717 Sheldon Road in Grand Haven.
The program will also help address ways people can reduce unwanted phone calls, junk mail, plus how to report a problem or scam. ??It is being offered as a free public service by the church?s Esther Circle group, in conjunction with Senior Brigade, a Michigan seniors? initiative to help protect them against scam artists and other predators.? All women and men from the general public are invited to attend the presentation.
Other topics included in the program include:? how to eliminate pre-approved credit card offers, how to request a free credit report, how to reduce telemarketing calls, what to look for to determine if charities are registered in Michigan and how much the charity spends on its programs, plus how to reduce the amount of unsolicited national advertising people receive at home.? Handouts will be provided to educate citizens on how to take action if they become a victim of a scam and where to file complaints in order to empower oneself and prepare for the future.
?The scams in Michigan are escalating, as is the number of people who are scammed,? said Vicki Reis, member of the Esther Circle at United Methodist Church of the Dunes.
