A firefighter was injured during a fire at St. Patrick Proto-Cathedral Parish (Breena Kerr)
SAN JOSE (CBS SF) ? A firefighter was seriously injured while battling a three-alarm fire at a San Jose church late Thursday morning, a fire captain said.
The fire was reported at St. Patrick Proto-Cathedral Parish at 389 E. Santa Clara St. at 11:22 a.m.
The injury occurred a few minutes before noon, just as firefighters were getting the blaze under control, San Jose fire Capt. Mary Gutierrez said.
The firefighter, a 15-year veteran of the department, was taken to a hospital, but the severity of his injuries was not yet clear, she said. She says her injured colleague was unconscious when he was taken from the scene.
Gutierrez was emotional while discussing her injured colleague.
?This is a tough day for all of us ? we are all a big family here,? she said.
The firefighter?s name has not been released because the fire department was still trying to notify his family of the situation.
Gutierrez said firefighters faced ?blackout conditions? inside the dark, smoke-filled church during the fire. She said the church was badly damaged by the blaze.
Some of the stained glass in the front of the cathedral was broken, and there was a hole in the sloped roof.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The adjacent St. Patrick School was evacuated during the fire but was not damaged, and no students were injured. Gutierrez said the children are being brought back to class to continue their school day.
About 60 firefighters responded to the blaze.
