The Tacoma Titans will be competing at Nationals later this month. March 22 through 25 Tacoma?s National Wheelchair Basketball Association (NWBA) team will travel to Colorado Springs to compete at the national-level tournament held at the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Training Facility. This is the team?s second year, and will be their first trip to Nationals.
The Titans are a part of Tacoma?s Metro Parks Adaptive Recreation Programs, which gives individuals with physical disabilities, including many wounded veterans, the opportunity to participate and compete in a variety of sports. Along with wheelchair basketball, sports offered include archery, track and field, goalball, rowing, sitting volleyball, swimming, bocce, and kayaking/canoeing.
The Titans team, the only one of its kind in our region, includes eight players and two coaches from the South Sound area. To cover the expense of getting the whole team, along with their 16 wheelchairs to Colorado, they are looking for the support of the community.
The Greater Metro Parks Foundation is hosting a fundraising event March 10, at noon, at Gray Middle School in South Tacoma to support the team at their last home game before heading to the National Tournament. All proceeds from this event will aid in travel costs, as well as future training throughout the year. Corporate and team sponsorship opportunities are available in the amounts of $250, $500, and $1,000. Donation inquiries should be directed to the Greater Metro Parks Foundation or by calling Metro Parks Tacoma Resource Development at (253) 305-1077.
If you can?t make the game at Gray, an off-the-court fundraiser is also taking place at Moctezuma?s Restaurant in Tacoma March 13 from 5:00-9:00 p.m. Fans can meet and greet the players, have some fun, and enjoy great food. Moctezuma?s will donate 20% of proceeds to the Titans.
