Cardio workouts are an important part of all fitness programs and we are lucky to have some many options available.
In simple terms, cardio (cardiovascular) exercise is any exercise that raises your heart rate and breathing rate, and had you ?huffing and puffing?. Cardio is often called aerobic exercise as it is improves your aerobic system ? your heart and lungs.
Benefits Of Cardio Workouts
As the name suggests, cardio exercises work your cardiovascular or aerobic system and is has the important job of keeping your heart and lungs healthy and working efficiently. Having a good fitness base also makes it easier for your heart to move blood and oxygen around your body. Improving your fitness is a goal many people have and improvements can be seen quite quickly.
Types Of Cardio
With cardio training, you have the option of training aerobically (using oxygen) or anaerobically (without oxygen) and can train at a high or low intensity. Many power and sprint athletes target their anaerobic system as they need quick, short bursts of energy. But most of us will train and want to improve our aerobic system to give us the ability to perform exercise for an extended period of time.
Intensity Of Your Cardio Workout
For a high intensity cardio workout, you need to work out at 80% or more of your maximum intensity level (as an easy guide, 80% of your max heart rate). This is a great way to increase your fitness and burn extra calories and fat. Low intensity cardio will see you working out at around 60% of your maximum level. This is a great level to work at if you are new to exercise, recovering from an injury or illness or just want a light workout.
