Betting on the dogs at Derby Lane

If TL Weaver a piece of land sold by local entrepreneurs spot in 1925, had no idea it was in the business of racing greyhounds would get. If paying the contractor could not get the mortgage, he came back to the ground, but now had a dog track on it: Derby Lane, the oldest racetrack in the United States. The Weaver family is still running and still going strong.

With lakes and greenery that surrounds it, is Derby Lane, where I sometimes trouble on my mind> Invitations because I distracted watching the wildlife. However, the race is worth seeing, because they have few ? if not the best ? the dogs in the country.

This is the track where the legendary Keefer the first 4 episodes of the 1986 season race won before 12 779 fans.

It is also the place where the business was so slow in the early years that Weaver sorts of other sporting events as an exhibition soccer game with the stagedEven the legendary Jim Thorpe. He also tried to race cars! It was not long, but like dogs race to win popularity, people like Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig came to see, walk the dogs.

Admission is free and children are welcome under adult supervision. There is a good restaurant, a couple of lounges and a sports bar. A lot of large flat screen make it easy to see the races and replays. Of course it is air conditioned, but you can sitthe terrace during the cooler months if you want. I like to sit there and go over my schedule or write postcards to my friends in New England that are freezing their Patoot off.

Do not miss news blog written by Vera Vera really nice Filipello, who has been involved with greyhound racing for 30 years in several states, including WV, WI and now Florida. Applies not only write but also participated in projects in film and video helpedGreyhound National Review and co-host of the world's largest greyhound events.
