'L Word' actress discovers new way to get kicked off Southwest Airlines flight

'L Word' actress Leisha Hailey and her girlfriend, Camilia Grey, were removed from a Southwest Airlines flight in El Paso after the couple shared a kiss. The airline says that their behavior was 'excessive.' Hailey and Grey are calling it homophobia.

Southwest Airlines runs a tight ship. Just ask Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong, who was escorted off an Oakland-to-Burbank flight earlier this month because his pants were too saggy. Or Kevin Smith, who was booted from the same flight last year because he was deemed too fat to fly . Or Florida resident Joe Winiecki who in 2007 was told to change his T-shirt, which displayed a sexual double entendre, or be removed from the flight. Or Mesa College student Kyla Ebbert, who earlier that year was lectured by a Southwest customer service rep who thought her outfit too revealing (Ebbert was wearing a denim skirt, a tank top, and a sweater).

On Monday, musician and "L Word" actress Leisha Hailey and her girlfriend, musician Camila Grey, discovered yet another way to get kicked off a Southwest Airlines flight.

It started with a kiss, shortly after Hailey and Grey boarded the plane in El Paso. According to the couple, a flight attendant approached them and informed them that Southwest was a "family airline." Within five minutes, the couple was off the plane.

"In no way were our actions on Southwest Airlines excessive, inappropriate or vulgar," wrote Hailey and Grey in a statement on their band's website. "We want to make it clear we were not making out or creating any kind of spectacle of ourselves, it was one, modest kiss."

Southwest sees it differently, a statement on the airline's website says that the flight crew received "several passenger complaints characterizing the behavior as excessive," and that the "conversation escalated to a level that was better resolved on the ground."

The airline later told Fox News that Hailey and Grey were also using profane language, and that "ultimately their aggressive reaction led to their removal from the aircraft."

Other celebrities have taken to Twitter to denounce the airline. Kirstie Alley, Kelly Osbourne, and Sandra Bernhard have all said they will no longer fly the airline. Not surprisingly, Kevin Smith has also joined in, calling the couple "Too fab to fly."

Southwest has long taken pride in its outreach to gays and lesbians. Its website touts the company's status as the official airline of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, the Gay-Straight Alliance Network, and the National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce.

This image was tarnished somewhat in June, when a Houston-based Southwest pilot with a stuck microphone button inadvertently broadcast repeated explicit comments about flight attendants' appearance, age, and sexual orientation over an air-traffic control channel. The pilot, who the airline did not identify, underwent diversity training and was reinstated.

Russia's Yandex invests $15M in US search underdog (AP)

SAN FRANCISCO ? Blekko, a Silicon Valley startup trying to build a spam-free search engine, is getting some love from Russia.

Yandex, the most popular search engine in Russia, is expressing its affinity with a $15 million investment in Blekko and a commitment to share some of its computing power and other technology with its new U.S. partner. Blekko is getting an additional $15 million from another group consisting mostly of its earlier investors ? U.S. Venture Partners, CMEA Capital and PivotNorth Capital

The alliance announced Thursday marks the first time Yandex has invested in a U.S. search service, according to Arkady Borkovsky, chief technology officer of Yandex's Silicon Valley lab. Yandex and its 3,000 employees hope to learn more about the nuances of U.S. search requests from Blekko.

"There could be a future for us here," Borkovsky said. "This is an interesting experiment for us and we are quite excited about it."

Yandex's investment in Blekko comes four months after the Russian company raised its profile in the U.S. with an initial public offering of stock that hasn't been a big hit on Wall Street so far.

Yandex's support is a coup for Blekko, a search engine on a crusade to remove the junk that can clutter the results of market leader, Google, and its two main rivals, Yahoo and Bing.

Blekko, which employs 27 people in Redwood Shores, Calif., tries to fight the search litter, or spam, by relying on humans to use hash tags to highlight the most useful results under frequently searched topics.

Just four months after Blekko hit the market late last year, Google unveiled sweeping changes to its search algorithm in an effort to reduce the rubbish showing up in its results from so-called "content farms" and other websites that had learned how to dupe Google's formula into giving a high ranking to largely irrelevant content.

Despite those changes, many of the results that Google delivers on frequently searched topics such as health remain a "train wreck," said Rich Skrenta, Blekko's CEO and founder.

Most Web surfers don't seem to have a problem with Google, which processes two out of three search requests in the U.S. Google's market dominance has held steady for years, despite challenges from Yahoo, Microsoft Corp.'s Bing and other startups, such as Cuil and Powerset, that have vowed to shake things up without leaving much of a dent.

Russia is one of the few countries where Google is a laggard. Yandex's share in Russia is almost as large as the one Google holds in the U.S., The advantage hasn't been as nearly as lucrative for Yandex, whose revenue this year is expected to be about $650 million. Google's U.S. revenue this year is expected to be between $17 billion and $18 billion.

The disparity may be one reason investors haven't been too keen on Yandex N.V.'s stock since it was priced at $25 in a May IPO. The shares stood at $22.13, down 77 cents, in early afternoon trading Thursday. The stock peaked at $42.01 on its first day of trading.

Skrenta, though, believes Yandex can help Blekko broaden its reach and improve its results. Besides giving it more money, Yandex is letting Blekko use some of its servers. That will give Blekko the means to more than double the size of its search index, which currently spans about 3 billion Web pages on 750 servers, Skrenta said. A larger index means Blekko should be able to do a better job responding to search requests on obscure topics that currently give its search engine problems.

If it works out like Skrenta hopes, more people will start coming to Blekko when they are looking for a Google alternative instead of Bing and Yahoo, which together have a roughly 30 percent share of the U.S. search market.

"People are rooting for the underdog in this space," Skrenta said.

Adolescents particularly susceptible to drinking habits of romantic partner's friends

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2011) ? The drinking habits of a romantic partner's friends are more likely to impact an adolescent's future drinking than are the behaviors of an adolescent's own friends or significant other, according to a new study in the October issue of the American Sociological Review.

"Dating someone whose friends are big drinkers is more likely to cause an adolescent to engage in dangerous drinking behaviors than are the drinking habits of the adolescent's own friends or romantic partner," said Derek Kreager, lead author of the study and an associate professor of crime, law, and justice at Pennsylvania State University. "This applies to both binge drinking and drinking frequency."

For example, the study found that the odds of an adolescent binge drinking if his or her partner's friends engage in heavy drinking is more than twice as high as the likelihood of an adolescent binge drinking if his or her friends or significant other drink heavily.

"The friends of a partner are likely to be very different from the adolescent and his or her friends and they might also be, at least a little, different from the partner," said Kreager, who coauthored the study with Dana A. Haynie, a sociology professor at Ohio State University. "Adolescents are motivated to be more like their partner's friends in an effort to strengthen their relationship with their partner."

Of course, the influence of a significant other's friends on an adolescent's drinking habits is not always negative. "If an adolescent is a drinker and he or she starts going out with someone whose friends predominately don't drink, you would find the same effect but in the opposite direction," Kreager said.

Relying on data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, a survey of U.S. adolescents enrolled in grades 7 through 12 in the 1994-1995 school year, the Kreager/Haynie study considers responses from 449 couples (898 students) in 1994, when they hadn't necessarily gotten together yet, and in 1996, after they had become a couple. Kreager and Haynie focus on heterosexual couples who were students during both waves of the survey.

In their study, the authors also found that before getting together, adolescent dating partners share few of the same friends and that an adolescent's friends are likely to be the same gender as he or she. "Couples often come from different friendship groups," said Kreager.

These results support the idea that the peer contexts of dating expose adolescents to new opportunities and norms that influence their own drinking behavior, while also increasing opposite-gender friendship ties and expanding early adolescent mixed-gender peer groups, according to the authors.

Still, Kreager said, it's important to note that although the drinking habits of a romantic partner's friends are more likely to impact an adolescent's future drinking than are the behaviors of an adolescent's own friends or significant other, the adolescent's friends and partner are likely to be influential nonetheless.

Interestingly, the research indicates limited gender differences in observed associations. "Consistent with prior literature, our findings indicate that girls are significantly less likely than their male partners to binge drink," Kreager said. "However, we find that connections with drinking friends, romantic partners, and friends-of partners have similar positive associations with the drinking habits of boys and girls. Moreover, our research suggests that, if anything, males are more susceptible to a significant other's influence than are girls."

In terms of policy implications, Kreager said, "The study demonstrates the need for educators and policymakers to more closely examine dating and the people dating puts adolescents in contact with when they consider interventions to address drinking behaviors, attitudes, and opportunities."

Healthy Hollywood: Get Movin' Monday - Dance Away The Inches Like Ricki Lake! (omg!)

By Terri MacLeod

NEW YORK., N.Y. -- "Dancing with the Stars" could be re-named "Celebrity Biggest Losers." Each season star contestants melt away the pounds, as they try and dance their way to the top prize.

"DWTS" contestant Ricki Lake proudly states she's already lost 8 1/2 inches - thanks to the show's daily four to five hour workouts.

PLAY IT NOW: Ricki Lake: 'Dancing With The Stars' Is 'An Opportunity Of A Lifetime'

"I'm hoping to pull a Kristie Alley," Lake reveals to People magazine. "I'm a little self-conscious of my arms and my back fat but they're trimming down really quickly," she adds.

Fellow "DWTS" contestant Nancy Grace is also shedding the pounds. The legal analyst has dropped 10 lbs. Not bad, ladies!

VIEW THE PHOTOS: 'Dancing With The Stars' Season 13: Week 1 Highlights

For most of us, the chance to be on "DWTS" is slim, but you can still boogie away the pounds.

"When you dance, the music, the moves, and atmosphere put you in a space where you forget that you are working out," reveals dance expert Ilyse Baker, who has worked with Rihanna and LeAnn Rimes. "When you dance you don't have to spend time looking at the clock counting down the seconds you have left to exercise."

Anybody can dance - whether it's at the clubs, a dance studio, or in the privacy of your own home. Plus, it's a fat-burning workout that tightens and tones. "There are several different dance styles to choose from that offer different ways to blast calories and tone several different areas," says Ilyse. "For example, Ballet is a great way to get those long, lean lines of a dancer that we are all destined to have and will leave you with a killer toned body. African Dance is an incredible all over energizing cardio workout where you can burn up to 1000 calories in 60 minutes."

Ilyse shares with Healthy Hollywood 3 moves that will sculpt your body. So, crank up the music and get moving!

For Killer Abs:
Place your legs hip width apart, soften your knees, tuck your pelvis forward, and engage your core. Pump your arms and thrust your pelvis forward to your favorite tunes. Try doing this exercise for 5 minutes to your favorite song and you will be smiling all the way to your 6-pack abs. This move works your entire midsection and the best part is that you do not have to do a single crunch on the floor.

VIEW THE PHOTOS: 'Dancing With The Stars' Season 13 Rehearsals

For Lean Legs:
Ballet helps to lengthen muscles and is a good way to go if you want to avoid bulky leg muscles. I love my Funky Plies move. Start in Ballet first position with your heels kissed together and your toes pointed out to about a 45-degree angle. Once you grasp this position, keep your feet turned out then walk your legs out to second position, which leaves your feet right underneath your shoulders. Keeping your arms by your sides, your chest lifted, bend straight down and then straighten your legs as you squeeze your butt cheeks together. Pop in your favorite music and start this move by bending down in your legs, keeping them wide then as you come up bring one leg in then repeat to the other side. You will feel this in your quads, glutes, hamstrings, and a little in your adductors as well.

For Fierce Arms:
Try playing my follow the leader game. Push your arms out to the sides of the room nice and strong. Pull your hands into your chest then drop your elbows down to the floor, fingertips shoot up towards the ceiling, and push away back to your starting position. Keep this movement strong and in control for maximum results. Put on your favorite tunes and do this exercise repeatedly until you feel the burn.

Obama can't blame the do-nothing Congress

Presidential criticism of Congress has been fruitful for incumbents in the past, but Obama should be aware that the political climate today is much different from that of 1948, when Harry Truman campaigned against the do-nothing 80th Congress.

When he unveiled his latest jobs plan earlier this month, President Obama seemed to be sending a clear challenge to House Republicans: Pass my agenda or face the wrath of voters. In doing so, he seems ready to run for reelection against congressional Republicans regardless of who the GOP nominates.

Presidential criticism of Congress during periods of divided government has been fruitful for incumbents in the past, but Mr. Obama should be aware that the political climate today is much different from that of 1948, when Harry Truman campaigned against the ?do-nothing? 80th Congress.

Incumbent Truman entered that election cycle at a decided disadvantage. Demobilization from World War II had sparked inflation, a housing shortage, and rampant labor unrest, leading to Truman?s approval rating sinking below 40 percent for much of the year. The Democratic party was also in a shambles. Rather than accept a strong civil rights plan, southern Democrats nominated Strom Thurmond on the ?Dixiecrat? ticket. The more liberal elements of the party formed the Progressive Party and nominated former Vice-President Henry Wallace. With the Democrats splintered, pundits forecast an easy win for the GOP nominee, New York Gov. Thomas E. Dewey.

Truman relished the underdog role and took two important steps to revive his candidacy. First, he called the Republican-controlled 80th Congress back into special session and demanded that they pass a laundry list of legislation, including bills that addressed civil rights, minimum wage, and aid to education. Second, he launched a nationwide campaign where he attacked the congressional Republicans constantly, laying the nation?s economic woes at the feet of the GOP and, by default, Governor Dewey.

Truman?s rhetorical offensive, in which he promised to ?give ?em hell,? was incredibly effective, largely because of Republican dysfunction. The Republicans were split between moderates under Dewey and strident conservatives led by Ohio Sen. Robert A. Taft. Dewey tried to make the Republicans appear more progressive and distanced himself from the pro-business record of the GOP. Taft hoped to limit the growth of the New Deal and move back to a system of limited government. The Republican platform, drafted by the Dewey wing, included the very things Truman asked for during the special session but was completely unpalatable to the conservatives in Congress asked to implement them.

Leading Along the Edge of Risk and Safety: Join Our Webinar This ...

Image

In order to create and maintain a safe, productive workplace, managers must balance along the thin edge of innovation. In our eBook and accompanying webinar, expert contributors investigate how a culture of safety develops over time, so that when a problem arises, the natural first response is the right one.

Join the free webinar this Thursday with Elaine Cohen, Norman Marks, and Simon Herriot.

Sustainability consultant Elaine Cohen looks at safe driving practices and how they are not part of most corporate sustainability programs, but given the numbers of accidents on company time, they should be. Norman Marks, a risk manager at SAP, reviews his own daily commute as an example of how risk assessment can be made into a daily habit. Simon Herriot of DuPont addresses the importance role of the leader in creating enthusiasm for safety programs among employees.

In our webinar, these 3 panelists will take questions from the audience and specifically address:

  • How risk management can be made into a daily practice
  • Innovative community models for leadership, communication, and disaster response
  • The crucial importance of strong leadership in creating an environment where employees believe in safety as much as their risk managers do
  • Corporate responsibility and safety practices that managers often overlook

In the eBook (free with registration for the webinar or alone), 2 additional specialists contribute their experience and expertise. Elaine Scarry, Harvard professor and author, looks at several innovative Canadian communities where disaster preparedness became a community pact, and worked when governement response teams were out of reach. Finally, Wendy Harman, Director of Social Strategy at Red Cross, gives examples of how the organization has adapted to a century of change while delivering a consistent, and critical, message to the public across mediums and nations.

UBS CEO Gruebel resigns over rogue trading loss

(AP) ? UBS chief executive Oswald Gruebel has resigned over a $2.3 billion loss caused by rogue trading at its investment division, which is to be restructured now to prevent similar incidents in future, the Swiss bank said Saturday.

Gruebel, who had come under heavy pressure from shareholders over the scandal, said he hoped his resignation would allow the bank to restore its reputation in the eyes of clients and investors.

"As CEO, I bear full responsibility for what occurs at UBS," he said in a memo to staff. "From my first day on the job I placed the reputation of the bank above all else. That is why I want to and must act according to my convictions."

UBS Europe chief Sergio P. Ermotti will take over immediately as interim chief executive until Gruebel's replacement is appointed.

Gruebel's departure caps 10 days of speculation over his future following the bank's announcement that a single London-based trader had evaded internal control systems and gambled away $2.3 billion.

The trader, 31-year-old Kweku Adoboli, was arrested Sept. 15 and charged with fraud and false accounting. A judge ordered him Thursday to be held in jail until a hearing next month.

The rogue trading loss is the third major scandal to hit Switzerland's biggest bank in recent years, and the second to come out of its investment unit. During the financial crisis, UBS was one of the European banks worst hit by failed investments in the subprime mortgage market. A year later, it became embroiled in an embarrassing U.S. tax evasion case.

UBS President Kaspar Villiger told reporters the board had tried to persuade Gruebel to stay until the bank's annual shareholder meeting next year, but the gravel-voiced German had wanted to send a strong signal about the trading loss immediately.

"He thinks that this act could maybe create a new basis for UBS to continue," said Villiger, who earlier noted that UBS wants to "turn this disaster into an opportunity."

Speculation has already begun over who is to succeed the 67-year-old Gruebel. Ermotti, a Swiss citizen who joined UBS from Italy's UniCredit, is considered a front-runner.

"Sergio is, of course, a strong candidate," said Villiger. He mentioned no other names.

Villiger said Gruebel, who was brought in more than two years ago to help revive the fortunes of the Zurich-based bank, had achieved "an impressive turnaround and strengthened UBS fundamentally."

Gruebel came out of retirement to lead UBS. A former trader, he steered the bank back to profit and resolved the U.S. tax evasion case, though not without blowing a hole in Switzerland's storied tradition of banking secrecy.

As head of UBS he also accepted new Swiss government rules that require the bank and its rival Credit Suisse to hold far greater capital reserves to prevent a possible collapse during a banking crisis.

"He steps down having helped make UBS one of the world's best capitalized banks," Villiger added.

Gruebel's resignation was inevitable, given the size of the loss and the bank's other recent risk-management failures, said Michael Robinson, a former U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission official who advises banks and companies on crisis communications.

"As soon as we found out that a single trader had lost what would surely have been their entire quarterly profit, (Gruebel) was just waiting to fall down and die," Robinson said, now a senior vice president at Levick Strategic Communications in Washington, D.C.

By responding quickly, Robinson said, UBS gave itself a chance to show it is serious about preventing similar problems in the future.

But the bank still must win over investors with substantive changes to its leadership and risk-management policies, he said. A similarly orderly transition wasn't likely at a scandal-plagued U.S. bank, given the scrutiny banks in the U.S. get from regulators, Congress and a recession-weary public.

"This is very orderly; it's the kind of thing you'd expect from a European institution as opposed to an American institution," Robinson said.

The UBS board, which met in Singapore this week, said it would seek to put in place measures to prevent a similar rogue trading loss from recurring.

The bank said it would hold on to its integrated strategy, but that the investment business would be simplified to ensure there was less risk, using less capital to produce more reliable returns. Asked whether investment bank chief Carsten Kengeter would keep his job, Villiger said: "I do not see any reasons to doubt (his) future."

Earlier this week, the Government of Singapore Investment Corp. ? the largest UBS shareholder ? said in a rare public rebuke that it was concerned about lapses at UBS and called on the bank to restore confidence.

The sovereign wealth fund, which owns about 6.4 percent of UBS, has suffered heavy losses on its investment as the bank's share price has more than halved since it became a shareholder.

In Washington, Tharman Shanmugaratnam, deputy prime minister of Singapore and minister of finance, refused to comment on UBS developments on Saturday, insisting on the separation between the government and the Government of Singapore Investment Corporation decisions. He said he was sure the GSIC officials were in touch with UBS officials and Swiss regulators. Tharman was in Washington, chairing the meeting of the International Monetary Fund's policy-setting committee.

Training Talk With Vern Gambetta (Part 1) ? G. Martin Bingisser

Training expert Vern Gambetta

Several months ago I came across an audio interview with coach Vern Gambetta. Vern is not a throwing coach; instead is a training expert that has been called a jack of all trades. He started as a decathlete and multi-event coach, but has since coached athletes in every event group. He was a cofounder of the USATF coaching education program, has written several books, and serves on the editorial board for the IAAF technical journal. But a large chunk of his career was spent outside of track and field as a pioneer in the field of strength and conditioning with several professional teams in baseball, basketball, and other sports.

When I heard Vern talk, nearly everything he was saying rung true to what I have learned from Bondarchuk and others. But, as always, I had some additional questions and finally had the time to speak to him about training last weekend. Part one below discusses where throwers tend to be ahead of or behind other sports in terms of training. Part two will discuss the timely topic of off-season training and what scientific advances he sees on the horizon.

If you are interested in learning more about Vern?s ideas, pick up one of his books, read his blog, or follow him on Twitter.

How do throwers stack up in the training department

Martin: Throughout your career you?ve worked with essentially every major sport and every track and field event. When you look at throwers as a whole, what things do you see that we do well? Where is our training lag behind others?

Vern: The way to get maximal power in training is to release the implement and throwers do well is incorporating releases of various forms into training. Some people have taken to calling this the multi-throw, but it is just ballistic training. If you take a heavy implement like the bench press, you are only accelerating that weight for a short period of time and then you have to decelerate it to stop it even if you are moving it fast. If you don?t release the implement, you won?t achieve maximum power production.

What I saw when I was training for decathlon in Santa Barbara and a lot of the Europeans would come over to train, they didn?t spend anywhere near the time we spent in the weight room. Now these were decathletes, but they could throw because they had the ballistic ability to really accelerate the implement. They would throw heavy implements like 20kg weight plates. That is one the things that, particularly European throwers, do very well going back several decades. And the hammer throwers showed us the way on that more than anyone else.

Throwers have a history of pioneering strength and weight training. If you look back at the 1950s and 1960s with Perry O?Brien and Otis Chandler, the records began to jump when they changed the technique and strength training. But as with anything, you can go too far down a path once you?ve started in one direction. Now, especially American throwers, get too focused on chasing numbers in the weight room. I remember George Woods talking at a clinic one time and he said every 20 or 25 pounds his bench press goes up, he could count on a certain number of extra inches or feet in his throw.

Regardless of the sport, you have to come back to the demands of the event. The unifying element of each of the throws is that you are trying to find optimum release velocity. When you look at a spectrum of strength and power training, you will emphasize different elements at different times, but it will always come back to speed. A mistake we make with young throwers is to add strength first. Let?s get really good coordination and refine their model by developing their strength and technique in parallel. For me, working on coordinative capacities is what the key is and there are a lot of throwers in the world who have done this: Andreas Thorkildsen, Jan Zelezny, Werner G?nth?r.

The role of drills

Martin: That relates to one of my other questions. On your blog you don?t recommend training for technique or strength; you focus on them both in parallel.? I agree and I see this separation not just in training, but also in drills where people will break the throw into parts. The hammer is about rhythm and connecting the turns together. If you just do the first turn, it means nothing with out the second turn, and that means nothing without the third, and so on. Bondarchuk has us do multi-throws, but when we pick up the hammer we throw. Are drills as prevalent in other events?

Vern: I see this with each event right now. I think it has to do something with what I call ?Internet training porn.? People can put up all these wacko drills on YouTube and try to impress each other. I am working on a presentation now and I?ve been putting together five of the dumbest drills I?ve seen like throwing the shot from your knees. Why? It makes no sense. Throw the shot. Throw a lighter shot. Throw a heavier shot. What are you working on? I just spent some time with Jerry Clayton, the throws coach at Auburn, after he came back from the World Championships. He said the only people you saw doing drills there were the American throwers. The drills break things into too many parts. Here again Bondarchuk opened my eyes.

A few years ago I was working with a post-collegiate elite heptathlete after her coach recommended she visit me for some training. The first day we are out with the shot put I just watched as she spent 15 minutes doing drills. I stopped her, gave her the shot, and told her to just throw the shot so that I could see what she could do. She had a drill for her wrist, a drill for everything and that?s the way her throw ended up looking. After that, we just worked on full throws to put it together.

That right now is killing us. It?s killing us in the sprints, the jumps, every event. Similar is not the same, that?s what we have to remember. Just because it looks like the event, the dynamics are different and we have to be acutely aware of that. As you can tell, I get pretty fired up about this because I?ve made those mistakes. It?s one of the lessons I learned when Tom Tellez invited me to come down and spend three days with him during my last year at Cal Berkeley. I watched Carl Lewis train and didn?t see three drills in three days. And then you cross reference to Bondarchuk and others. And if the drills are done for a specific purpose and they are not form drills, but rather special strength drills, then it is another story. It is not that you don?t do drills, but your range is very narrow and you have to make sure it doesn?t cause neural interference with your event.

Focus on movements, not muscles

Martin: One the principles you list as a Systemic Sport Development Principle is to train movements, not muscles. Is this related?

Vern: Sure. That point was first meant in terms of strength training. If you go back and look at the early strength training methodology used in track and field, there was a big bodybuilding influence. The brain doesn?t recognize individual muscles; it doesn?t break things into parts. It looks for muscle synergies, flow, rhythm, and tempo. If you look at all the throws, not just the hammer throw, there is a certain rhythm and tempo governed by the weight of the implement, size of the athlete, size of the circle, etc. You cannot have an undo focus just on parts.

Martin: When you were getting into working with baseball and basketball and other sports, you were one of the first people to take that type of position and got to develop a lot from scratch. Did you find it easier to implement the ?movements not muscles? mentality since they didn?t have methods that grew out of bodybuilding?

Vern: To a certain extent, but when you look at baseball, they tend to look at just the arm and shoulder. Luckily, parallel to the time I started to get involved, the biomechanist Dr. Chuck Dillman started doing biomechanical analysis of pitchers and explained the concept of the kinetic change to our coaches. They bought in. But that was just within our organization with the White Sox and the rest of baseball didn?t necessarily buy in.

When you are sailing uncharted waters people sometimes look at you like you have two heads, but when you start to have success they notice. The first thing we noticed is that the injuries just stopped and I?ve seen the same with applying this to swimming. Look at the kinetic change and see how effectively you are connecting the links. Then ask if you need to strengthen, lengthen, or make other changes to make the body more connected.

Martin: What are the elements of training this aspect? Is it just exercises and multi-throws in the case of a hammer thrower?

Vern: It?s the things I?ve read on your blog. It?s what Bondarchuk and Klaus Bartonietz talks about. I think it?s also throwing left handed, as you saw some of in the famous Werner G?nth?r training video.? That is something we even did with our pitchers the day after they threw for the cross-education effect.

I think there is still a lot of room in all of the throws for exploring general coordination. Tumbling, trampoline, and other types of general gymnastics moves can be used to improve body awareness and relationships. I do think the multi-throws, throwing various weighted implements, right and left handed throws, etc. help enhance connection. The current thinking about skill acquisition and motor learning would say that you shouldn?t do that. But my experience tells me that the more pathways I can open, the more connections I can make. Then when I get to my specific activity the better I will be at it. That?s how I would approach it.

Check back in a few days for Part Two, where we will discuss discuss the timely topic of off-season training and what scientific advances he sees on the horizon.

Heavier kids experience more social problems (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) ? Children who are heavier than their peers at ages four and five are more likely to struggle in their relationships with other kids several years later, an Australian study suggests.

After following more than 3,300 children for about four years, researchers found that the heavy kids were up to 20 percent more likely at age eight or nine to be described by their parents as having social difficulties and by teachers as having emotional problems.

"It's interesting that we're seeing these problems at an early age," said Christina Calamaro, a professor at the University of Maryland School of Nursing, who did not participate in the research.

"I think this speaks to the fact that health care providers need to take weight into consideration at an earlier age, so we can cut it off at the pass before they hit middle school," she told Reuters Health.

The researchers surveyed the parents and teachers of 3,363 Australian children participating in a large national health study. The interviews were conducted first when the kids were four or five, and again four years later.

The questions involved measures of children's mental and behavioral health, such as emotional problems, hyperactivity and social skills.

Children also had their weight and height checked at each age.

At ages four and five, 222 boys (13 percent) and 264 girls (16 percent) were determined to be overweight, while 77 boys (4.5 percent) and 87 girls (5.2 percent) were obese.

Those kids with a body mass index (BMI -- a measure of weight relative to height) at least 1.6 points greater than their normal-weight peers at a young age were more at risk of having social problems, including isolation or teasing, later on.

For a five year old boy who is 40 inches tall and 40 pounds, for instance, a 1.6-point increase in BMI would translate into a weight gain of about two pounds.

At ages eight and nine, the heavier kids were 15 percent more likely to receive an evaluation of "concerning," based on parents' and teachers' responses about social interactions with peers. The heavy kids were also 20 percent more likely to get a "concerning" score from teachers on emotional development.

Lead author Michael Sawyer, a professor at the University of Adelaide, said it's important to evaluate children's social life in grade school because this is the age at which it starts to increase in importance.

"The quality of peer relationships during this period of time has the potential to have a significant impact on children's later mental health," Sawyer wrote in an email to Reuters Health.

In the study, published in the journal Pediatrics, the authors write that the stigma of being overweight can translate into social struggles for these children, and the kids might withdraw themselves from social activities because they fear teasing.

Obese children are more likely to be bullied (see Reuters Health story of May 3, 2010).

Sawyer's group did not find any differences between the heavy kids and the normal weight kids in their risk of mental health problems, such as hyperactivity or conduct disorders.

Other studies have found that later in life, however, obesity puts adults at greater risk of developing a mental illness like depression or anxiety.

Sawyer said he'd like to continue following the children to see whether the social problems his study revealed might be precursors to later mental health problems.

The forum was to commemorate the 30th anniversary of BPAFFC?s foundation.? New Zealand China Friendship Society was represented by Vice-President Dave Bromwich and Christchurch Branch committee member Deborah Rhode. For Deborah, it was a chance to meet some old friends from BPAFFC and from around the world who had met on an extensive overland trip from Yunnan through Tibet and back to Beijing in 2002, organised by BPAFFC.

For both Dave and Deborah it was a chance to meet representatives from other China Friendship organisations, and to learn what they are doing.

Dave delivered a speech titled ?New Zealand China Friendship Society?s Experience of International Cooperation?.? In this he took the opportunity to outline the foundation of the society 60 years ago in Rewi Alley and Kathleen Hall, and then introduced our current project work based in this legacy. He also showed how tours are providing opportunity to visit our project sites and meet our Kathleen Hall scholars. For the speech see here.

Chaoyang district CBD

For the tour options, both Ds selected the tour of Chaoyang district, which took in the new 798 Art district, a disused factory that has been converted into a number of art galleries and studios. We also visited the new Beijing Municipal Museum. Chaoyang district is an extensive and growing new part oif Beijing which incorporates the CBD.? Many of the modern new buildings are in this area, including the ?zigzag? CCTV building with its unique cantilevered upper section.

Aside:

As a young reporter, she had been researching a story about Agnes Smedley, who had spent some time in Germany.? During the visit to Beijing in 1982 she had gone to the Youxiew compound in Taijichang for an appointment when she saw a man she knew as Rewi Alley.? She approached him, and organised an interview.?
