Fathers, sons, and film - Stage - Baltimore City Paper

It?s the kind of statement only a 19-year-old artist with his entire career ahead of him could make.

?I need to control everything,? says Zach Greenbaum, a film major at the Maryland Institute College of Art. ?I hate making concessions . . . ?

No compromise! Total control!

And the kind of attitude?in a town like Baltimore, where dreamers are often blessed not to know what they don?t know?that it takes to make it in a field where many are called but the chosen are few.

?Film is the way I think,? says Greenbaum, who began fooling around with cameras in the third grade and has made 10 films, most of them school projects. ?It?s my way of crafting a response to the world around me.?

Zach spent the first half of his life on South Exeter Street in Little Italy with his father, a Baltimore artist. From about the age of 10, he?s lived in Pikesville with his mom, a schoolteacher named Barbara Gayle Askinosie from Long Island, N.Y.

A 2012 graduate of the Carver Center for the Arts and Technology in Towson, he is on scholarship at MICA in Bolton Hill and somewhat resembles a young?an impossibly young?Stanley Kubrick, a hero of his.

?I admire Kubrick and Herzog and Kurosawa,? says Greenbaum, running down an especially masculine hallway of the canon. ?I try to copy their intensity?they?ll stop at nothing.?

Zach?s own intensity exhibits itself in persistence (film is about all he does, constantly shooting and editing) and tends toward landscapes?running water, industrial sites, the odd piece of statuary?accompanied by the kind of spare, evocative music you might hear at a wellness center.

?My work is often a contemplation of ideas which, in typical filmmaking with a plot structure, would take a saga to articulate,? he says, speaking specifically of this year?s Chimera, an attempt to ?create a symbiotic relationship between images and sound . . . something that takes you on a shuttle of emotions in each scene.?

Which means it is almost impossible to say what the film?complete with jarring scenes of a rusted, rural sculpture of a cowboy holding a beer?is about unless you see it yourself and come to your own conclusions.

?The cowboy is a metaphor for our primordial fear and our innermost feelings of angst and unease,? says Greenbaum. ?He?s a gatekeeper for the unknown . . . our fear of the unknown.?

And then the film turns beautiful again?reservoirs and naked trees in winter; the viewer has made it to the other side.

Zach sits at a sidewalk cafe in Fells Point, trading stories of film and family with his father, the visual artist and actor Joseph Greenbaum, 56, a 1975 graduate of Milford Mill High School.

?My dad has never doubted me,? says Zach. ?If it were not for his skill as an actor and dedication to my craft?as well as a mutual understanding as two artists?I can?t say I?d be where I am today.?

Joseph is known in Native American circles by his Cherokee name, Joseph Stands With Many, his Indian heritage rooted in the farmland of Purvis, Miss., via his full-blooded mother, Sheila Reese.

Joseph?s father?Jerry Green?was a journeyman ?hoofer? who grew up several blocks north of the waterfront on South Ann Street. Joseph says his parents met in a New Orleans dance hall. When Joseph was a boy, his father would take him up the gangways of ships docked at the foot of Broadway and try to see if they could get a meal with the crew, not so much for free grub but for the adventure.

Also nearby, the Baltimore American Indian Center on Broadway, where Zach?s film The Tacit Tome is part of an exhibit called Stories in Form, along with works by Ashley Minner, Waylon Gary White Deer, and others, through Sept. 21.

Joseph appears in many of his son?s films. In several he is cast alongside his old friend and sometime combatant Keith Worz from the late ?70s and early ?80s downtown art and Marble Bar punk scene.

In Zach?s short film Out to Lunch?seven minutes of black-and-white inspired by Jim Jarmusch?s 2003 pastiche Coffee & Cigarettes?Joseph sits tableside as Worz spins yarns about conning a fellow patient at Spring Grove State Hospital.

The teenage Greenbaum on Worz: ?I automatically knew this guy was fucking insane.?

Worz, 56, returns the compliment: ?This kid has a really good eye for the camera. His IQ is so high?super-intelligent?that [the ideas] go right onto film.?

The Tacit Tome is decidedly less absurd, a nearly hour-long, partial documentary focusing on Native American culture and the importance of storytelling beyond entertainment. Joseph Stands With Many narrates.

?American civilization trivializes stories,? explains Joseph in voiceover. ?There are stories for kids and adult stories.

?We have our religious stories and we save those for once a week. We don?t do that. It?s all one thing. Everything that we do is combined, a unity, a harmony . . . if you don?t have stories to tell, to share, to teach, to entertain [and] philosophize with, you don?t have anything.?

This year, on an early July vacation to Kentucky, where Joseph performed a traditional Cherokee wedding ceremony, Zach took time to film the skinning and butchering of a deer. Somewhere along the line, the footage will find its way into one of his experimental, avant-garde, pseudo-documentary productions.

He will wear every hat?cinematographer, writer, director, and editor?while choosing the music and figuring out a way to fund his own production company.

Total control, sans compromise.

?I have no choice [but to make films],? he says. ?I attribute it to the universe.?

Good luck, kid.

Stories in Form, including The Tacit tome, is on view at the Baltimore American Indian Center Heritage Museum.

Sensitive parenting can boost premature children's school performance

Sensitive parenting helps protect against the negative effects of being born prematurely on children's school success, a new study has found.

Children born prematurely are at risk of a variety of neurological impairments which can mean they are more likely to need special educational support when they reach school age.

But a new study led by the University of Warwick shows that parents of very preterm and very low birthweight (VP/VLBW) children can increase their child's academic achievement through sensitive and cognitively stimulating parenting.

Researchers looked at parenting styles of parents of children aged 6 to see what effect they had on those children's school success when they reached the age of 13.

The study found that highly sensitive parenting at age 6 boosted the academic performance of VP/VLBW children when they reached 13 to levels similar to full-term children. A parallel increase was not seen for full-term children.

However, the results also showed that more cognitively stimulating early home environments benefit all children's long-term school success, regardless of whether they were premature or not.

Professor Dieter Wolke of University of Warwick said: "By sensitive parenting, we mean adapting one's parenting to the individual child's behaviour and responses, while clearly remaining the more competent partner and setting age appropriate limits."

"So for example providing gentle feedback and suggesting potential solutions rather than taking over and solving the tasks for the child.

"Cognitively stimulating parenting is where parents include activities designed to get children thinking such as reading to them or doing puzzles together.

"We found that both these styles of parenting have a positive effect in increasing school performance, with sensitive parenting particularly effective at closing the gap in achievement between preterm and low birth-weight children and their full-term counterparts."

The study, Effects of Sensitive Parenting on the Academic Resilience of Very Preterm and Very Low Birth Weight Adolescents was published in the Journal of Adolescent Health.

The researchers sought to clear up uncertainty among the scientific community about whether parenting has an influence on academic achievement of preterm children.

They looked at two groups of German children 314 very preterm/very low birth weight children and a control group of 338 full-term children.

They were studied from birth to age 13, with the researchers analysing socioeconomic status, neurological and physical impairment at age 20 months and levels of parental sensitive and cognitive stimulation at age 6 years. School success was measured from six to 13 years of age.

The study defined very preterm as babies born at less than 32 weeks gestation or weighing less than 1500g (3lb 5 oz).

The researchers found that the 15 per cent of highly sensitive parents within the VP/VLBW group had children whose academic performance at 13 years was similar to the full-term children.

In contrast, parents of VP/VLBW children who showed low sensitivity had children who required more special educational help and had more schooling problems.

Maternal sensitivity made little difference to the grades or academic performance of full-term children, who were much less susceptible to parenting differences.

The research found that cognitively stimulating parenting raised academic performance across both groups of children.

Professor Wolke said: "The results suggest that sensitive parenting boosts children's self-control and attention regulation, which are important for school success.

"We would like to see increased investment in programmes that equip parents of VP/VLBW with the skills needed to provide appropriate and sensitive support to their children."

Vancouver unveils Canada's first permanent rainbow crosswalk

Vancouver unveiled Canada?s first permanent rainbow-coloured crosswalk Monday morning to kick off the city?s Pride Week celebrations in the heart its LGBTQ-friendly Davie Street Village.

Coun. Tim Stevenson, who was the first openly-gay provincial cabinet minister in Canada, announced the crosswalks at the intersection of Davie and Bute streets at 8:30 a.m. Monday. City crews painted on the rainbows late Sunday night.

Over its 35-year history, the Vancouver Pride Parade has grown to be the fifth largest in the world with over 650,000 people involved last year. More than 150 floats from every part of the community will cover three kilometres over three hours.

Spencer Chandra Herbert, NDP MLA for the West End, welcomed the new crosswalks to an area that has ?kind of been a cultural capital, so to speak, for LGBTQ folks across Canada.?

?This is where the Pride Parade started, it?s where the fight for marriage equality started, the right to adopt,? Herbert said. ?It makes sense to mark that history and a little colour is a good thing.?

He predicted the busy intersection will even be a more popular place for ?people to hang out and get their photos (taken).?

Events like these are held every summer in nearly every major city in the world both as a celebration of LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered, Questioning) culture and to commemorate the 1969 Stonewall Riots in New York City that brought the struggle for gay and lesbian rights into the public eye.

Pfizer earnings beat forecasts as drugmaker plans split

(Reuters) - Pfizer Inc reported second-quarter earnings slightly ahead of forecasts on Tuesday as the United States' largest drugmaker lines up a business split that could lead to the spin-off of its generics division.

The company, which has been hit by falling sales of its now off-patent cholesterol fighter Lipitor, reaffirmed its financial outlook for the year.

For the second quarter, adjusted income fell 10 percent to $4.00 billion (2.6 billion pounds), or 56 cents a share, from $4.45 billion, or 59 cents a share, a year earlier. Revenue fell 7 percent to $12.97 billion.

Analysts, on average, were expecting second-quarter income of 55 cents a share, on revenue of $13.01 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Pfizer, whose CEO Ian Read has been reviewing the group's structure after divesting its nutrition and animal health businesses, said on Monday it planned to separate its commercial operations into two units for branded products and a third for generics.

Read said Pfizer's new model would help revitalize its innovation-based core drugs business, while enhancing the value of consumer and off-patent established brands, and maximizing the use of capital.

Pfizer's generics business, which represents 17 percent of total sales, has far lower profit margins than its patent-protected drugs.

Many analysts have urged Pfizer to spin off its generics business so it can focus on its core branded pharmaceuticals, although such a move is unlikely before 2016.

Within the core drugs division, revenues from cancer medicines increased by 28 percent in the second quarter, helped by new products like Inlyta and Xalkori.

Read also said he expected business in emerging markets to accelerate in the second half of the year, led by China.

"From a total company view, we are tracking to our expectations for the full year and continue to capitalize on the investments we are making to better position Pfizer for long-term success," he added.

Pfizer reiterated that it expected full-year earnings of $2.10 to $2.20 per share.

LIPITOR AND PREVNAR HITS

The 7 percent fall in quarterly revenue reflected an operational decline of 4 percent and an unfavorable impact from foreign exchange of 3 percent.

Operationally, the biggest hit came from losses of exclusivity on Lipitor, while shifts in government purchasing patterns for bulk orders of Pfizer's Prevnar pneumococcal vaccine also took their toll.

The U.S. drugmaker's determination to reshape its business is part of a wider trend by pharmaceutical companies around the world to divest slower-growing and maturing operations.

Abbott Laboratories's decision to split off its innovative drugs into AbbVie , in particular, has fueled a wider rethink across the industry as to whether other companies or groups of investors may be better owners for certain assets.

In Europe, GlaxoSmithKline is also selling off certain non-core brands, and in April it took a similar tack to Pfizer by opting to bundle many of its established drugs into a new unit.

Pfizer last November sold its nutrition business to Nestle SA for $11.85 billion in cash and in February spun off its animal health business into a new company called Zoetis .

FastJet boosts travel between Tanzania and South Africa

(eTN) ? ?For some time the Dar es Salaam to Johannesburg route has only been operated by one airline and the lack of competition has created inflated fares. FastJet will substantially reduce the average fare and in doing so will encourage more leisure and business traffic between Tanzania and South Africa,? says Richard Bodin, COO of FastJet, whom this correspondent met recently at the Routes Africa meeting in Kampala.

South Africa will be FastJet?s first international route from Tanzania, as the airline has indicated flights between Dar es Salaam and Johannesburg will commence on September 27. FastJet will initially operate three flights per week, using their A319 for the 3? hour flight, offering full-service carrier South African Airways, for some time now alone on the route without competition, the prospect of having to drop fares to retain market share.

Precision Air, which has been holding the route rights as designated carrier from Tanzania, did some time ago halt their flights to South Africa, leaving the route to South African Airways, which while flying daily kept fare levels up to a point where many passengers would rather fly with Kenya Airways via Nairobi or with RwandAir via Kigali in order to get more affordably deals. These two airlines will no doubt be watching the market entry of FastJet on the Johannesburg route with hawk eyes too to see how their own connecting traffic to South Africa might be affected.

A regular source in Dar es Salaam quipped: ?I hope they will this time state ticket prices and not fares, to which then all those other charges have to be added, so that the market has a true measure of what they charge against the charges of SAA, KQ, and WB. It should in fact be to their advantage to give the public a direct comparison and not needing calculators again to work out what the final cost will be.?

No launch fares or ticket cost have yet been announced but are expected to be published shortly, when bookings are opening on July 31.

Oil-rich Saudi prince sees fracking as a danger to his country

Prince Alwaleed bin Talal says the Gulf Arab Kingdom needs to reduce its reliance on crude oil, because fracking technology under development in other nations will result in less dependency on obtaining energy resources in his homeland.

Global demand for Saudi oil will experience further decline as the U.S. and other nations, including Great Britain and Canada, begin to find their own oil elsewhere.

Bin Talal, who is worth the U.S. equivalent of $20 billion, published an open letter to his government on Twitter, aimed to get the attention of his country?s oil minister, Ali al Naimi, Sky News reports.

He wrote the letter out of concern that the demand for oil from the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) is ?in continuous decline,? and referred to the dangerous nature of Saudi Arabia?s dependence on the exportation of oil.

He also cited financial statistics, showing how much dependence his kingdom has on the oil industry.

?Our country is facing a threat with the continuation of its near-complete reliance on oil, especially as 92 percent of the budget for this year depends on oil,? he said.

Dan Kish, the vice president of the Institute for Energy Research, cited the prince?s reason for this fear as an economic concern, as well as the power of manipulation that ?less reliable? countries exert over other nations when they have a monopoly on certain products.

?If we looked at energy as a weak spot, as a potential threat to national security and a reliance on others, this changes that,? he told The Daily Caller. ?Many people find it liberating in a lot of ways.?

The technologies of fracking and horizontal drilling, which the U.S. and Canada did not have access to a few years ago, are allowing them to find energy at home, saving money, and keeping them more independent.

Kish also says there is a link between energy consumption and economic success, citing historical examples to explain national economic booms which occurred among countries consuming the highest amounts of energy, while also stressing that the costs of fracking are going down.

?Shale energy has been a game changer for economic growth,? Stephanie Catarino Wissman, executive director of the Associated Petroleum Industries of Pennsylvania, told TheDC. ?Hydraulic fracturing provided $62 billion in additional government revenue in 2012 and will provide more than $111 billion in 2020. 1.7 million jobs are currently supported by unconventional oil and natural gas activity, and that number grows to some 2.5 million jobs in 2015, 3 million jobs in 2020, and 3.5 million jobs in 2035.?

If the U.S. continues with these practices, we may never need to obtain oil from the Middle East again, she said, adding, ?With the right policies in place, America could meet 100 percent of its liquid fuel needs through safe, reliable North American sources by 2024.?

Kish stated that whenever a nation is dependent on another for an energy source, they are somewhat under the heel of that nation ? something that plays a significant role in their economy.

On finding an energy source at home, Kish said, ?That?s independence, that?s liberty.?

Dow slides on home sales dip; markets await Fed meeting

stocks

Stocks kicked off the week on a weak note as investors hesitated to jump in ahead of the Federal Reserve meeting and a series of key economic reports.

(Read more: 'Rally has gone too far,' Citi strategist says)

The Dow Jones Industrial Average finished 36 points lower, dragged by Bank of America and Hewlett-Packard, after squeezing out its fifth-consecutive weekly rally last week.

The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq also closed lower. The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), widely considered the best gauge of fear in the market, rose above 13.

Still, the S&P 500 remains on pace for its best monthly gain since October 2011.

Among key S&P Sectors, energy and financials led the laggards, while telecoms gained.

On the economic front, pending home sales dipped 0.4 percent in June, according to the National Association of Realtors, pulling back from a six-year high in the previous month.

About one-fifth of the S&P 500 companies report earnings in the coming week. About half of the S&P 500 has reported earnings so far, with 68 percent beating earnings estimates, and 56 percent topping revenue forecasts, according to data from Thomson Reuters.

However, market attention will mostly be on the Federal Reserve's two-day meeting, which starts on Tuesday and may give an indication of when the central bank's massive asset purchase program will be tailed back. The Bank of England and the European Central Bank will also meet this week.

"All of them are expected to touch on the subject of forward guidance, albeit to various extents," Credit Agricole analysts wrote in a research note. "The clarity of the symphony will determine the level of support to the risk appetite. Should any of them be more explicit (more dovish) about forward guidance, the market can be expected to react in a positive way."

(Read more:Changes to Fed 'forward guidance' could lead to this)

The gross domestic product for the second quarter will be reported on Wednesday and the key payrolls report on Friday.

Meanwhile, Asian equity markets declined across the board as renewed fears of an economic slowdown in China hindered gains. Japanese stocks fell to a new four-week low on the back of the strengthening yen. The dollar-yen hit a new one-month low of 97.61 leading to a sell-off across the export-heavy Nikkei index.

(AP) ? Escalating the confrontation after clashes that left 83 supporters of Egypt's ousted Islamist president dead, the interim government moved Sunday toward dismantling two pro-Mohammed Morsi sit-in camps, accusing protesters of "terrorism" and vowing to deal with them decisively.

Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood denounced Saturday's bloodshed as evidence of the brutality of the military-backed regime. But many accused the group's leaders of trying to capitalize on the loss of life to win sympathy after millions took to the streets in a show of support for the military chief who ousted Morsi in a coup.

Gen. Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi said he would take the popular support as a mandate to deal with violence and "potential terrorism" ? a thinly veiled reference to a widely expected crackdown on Morsi supporters in the sit-in camps in Cairo and against radical Islamists in the Sinai peninsula who have been waging deadly attacks against security forces since Morsi was ousted in a July 3 military coup.

The coup followed days of mass protests by millions of Egyptians demanding that Morsi step down after a year in office as Egypt's first elected president. The monthlong sit-ins have been the launch pad of street protests that often ended violently when Morsi's supporters clashed with opponents or security forces.

Islamists led by the Brotherhood staunchly reject the new post-Morsi leadership and insist the only possible solution to the crisis is to reinstate him. Meanwhile, the interim leadership is pushing ahead with a fast-track transition plan to return to a democratically elected government by early next year.

The Brotherhood, accused by critics of trying to monopolize power during Morsi's year in office, routinely claims its supporters are killed in cold blood by army troops, police or thugs sponsored by the Interior Ministry, which is in charge of police. However, witnesses and videos posted on social networking sites show that Morsi's supporters consistently use rocks, firebombs and firearms against opponents, who behave similarly.

The Brotherhood's tactic is clearly designed to win sympathy at home and abroad by portraying itself as a victimized party pitted against an army and a police force armed to the teeth.

"We urge the United Nations, the international human community ... to come down and rescue the hundreds of thousands from the massacre by the live ammunition in the hands of the criminals," senior Brotherhood leader Mohammed el-Beltagi shouted from the stage at the larger of the two Cairo sit-ins.

"We want intervention by the international organizations ... to rescue the people. We urge the Egyptian people to come to our rescue. ... The people are slaughtered like sheep",'' declared el-Beltagi, who has an arrest warrant issued against him for inciting violence.

Mohammed Badie, the Brotherhood's supreme leader, launched a stinging attack on el-Sissi over the latest violence, saying the military chief was leading a "bloody regime" and urging his followers to stand fast.

"Don't be sad and don't despair," he said in a message that heavily quoted from the Quran, Islam's holy book. Posted on the Brotherhood's website, Badie said those killed in the latest violence were martyrs who will be rewarded with a place in heaven.

The international community, meanwhile, urged restraint.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry issued a strongly worded statement telling Egyptian authorities it was "essential" they respect the right to peaceful protest and calling on all sides to enter a "meaningful political dialogue.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon also asked security forces to "act with full respect for human rights" and demonstrators to "exercise restraint."

Catherine Ashton, the EU's foreign policy chief, arrived in Cairo on Sunday for her second visit to Egypt this month, a sign of the alarm felt in the West over the continuing bloodshed. She was to meet Egyptian leaders on Monday.

The U.N.'s human rights chief, Navi Pillay, also condemned the violence and called for a "credible, independent investigation" into the killings.

"I fear for the future of Egypt if the military and other security forces, as well as some demonstrators, continue to take such a confrontational and aggressive approach. Supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood have the right to protest peacefully like anyone else," Pillay said.

The violence continued Sunday, when deadly clashes during funerals for two of the slain Morsi supporters left two men dead and scores injured in two cities north of Cairo, Port Said and Kafr el-Zayat.

Interior Minister Mohammed Ibrahim warned security forces would deal decisively with any attempts to destabilize the country. Ibrahim accused the pro-Morsi side of provoking bloodshed to win sympathy and suggested authorities would move against the two pro-Morsi protest camps outside the Rabaah al-Adawiya mosque in eastern Cairo and in Nahda Square, near the main campus of Cairo University.

"I assure the glorious people of Egypt that the police are determined and capable to maintain security and safety to their nation with the support of the sincere sons of the country," Ibrahim said during a graduation ceremony at the national police academy. "We will very strongly and decisively deal with anyone who attempts to undermine stability."

He depicted the two encampments as a danger to the public, pointing to nine bodies found nearby in recent days. Some had been tortured to death, police said, apparently by sit-in participants who believed they were spies. "Soon we will deal with both sit-ins," he said.

Setting the stage for more confrontation, the military-installed interim president gave the prime minister the power to grant the military the right to arrest civilians in what government officials suggested was a prelude to a major crackdown on Morsi's supporters or Islamic militants who have stepped up attacks against security forces in the Sinai Peninsula.

At least 20 members of the security forces have been killed in Sinai by suspected militants and nearly 250 in the rest of the country, including the 83 killed in Cairo on Saturday.

"The more bloodshed there, the more it is impossible to reach a compromise or middle ground," said Kamal Habib, a prominent scholar in Islamic movements and a former Islamist himself.

The two sides, he said, were gearing toward more confrontations.

A senior aide to interim President Adly Masnour, meanwhile, sought to prepare the public for possible action to dismantle the sit-in camps, telling reporters that Morsi's supporters were armed, terrorizing residents in the area.

"It has now become inevitable for the state to take measures necessary to protect society," he said.

The nation's highest security body ? the National Defense Council ? issued a statement saying the pro-Morsi sit-in camps violated Egypt's national security and warning that "decisive and firm" action would be taken. It also urged the protesters to renounce violence and stop "violence and terrorism and verbal and physical assaults on citizens."

The council, chaired by the interim president and including the prime minister, defense and foreign ministers, said it deeply regretted the loss of life, but did not blame any party for it.

Saturday's clashes ? the deadliest since more than 50 Morsi supporters were killed by troops on July 8 ? took place before dawn when police and armed men in civilian clothes opened fire on supporters of the former president as they tried to expand their sit-in camp outside Rabaah al-Adawiya by moving onto a nearby main boulevard.

Civilians, sometimes with weapons, frequently join police in Cairo demonstrations. In some cases, they appear to be plainclothes police, in others residents who back the security forces.

Videos posted Sunday on social networking sites showed the Morsi supporters approaching a police line backed by armored vehicles at the entrance of the ramp to a key bridge that runs across the heart of the city. They also showed police and men in civilian clothes pointing their rifles at the protesters, many of whom wore industrial helmets and homemade body armor and stood behind makeshift barricades.

Mohamed Wasfi, a children's book publicist who videotaped the clashes from his apartment balcony, said the protesters attempted to spill oil on the street to stop cars from approaching the bridge, a tactic used by Morsi supporters last week on an overpass that leads to Cairo's international airport. Shortly afterward, another group of protesters approached the police line and tore down metal barricades, prompting police to fire tear gas, he told The Associated Press.

He said some protesters fired birdshot at the police, who responded with birdshot and tear gas.

Another video, posted by the Interior Ministry, showed protesters hurling stones and firebombs at the security forces from behind their barricades. One masked man was shown shooting at the police with what appeared to be a large silver-plated pistol. The authenticity of the videos could not be independently verified, but they generally conformed with AP reporting.

No army troops were on the scene, but the international community and human rights groups expressed concern the military had allowed the carnage to occur.

Human Rights Watch said many of those killed were shot in the head or chest and the killings took place over several hours. The New York-based group said it spoke to witnesses and reviewed extensive video footage of the events. It said medical staff said some of the deaths appeared to be targeted killings because the position of the shots would likely result in death.

3 Nutrients Linked with a Better Night's Sleep

?

I'm not sure exactly when it happened, but the U.S. seems to have become a nation obsessed with pills. If something doesn't work right, no worries, there's a pill for that.

So when we have trouble sleeping, naturally, we go see the doctor for a prescription. Who cares that we might try to sleepwalk?our way behind the wheel of a car? At least we're sleeping, right? Wrong!

If you ask me, prescriptions, especially those with severe and dangerous side effects, should always be a last resort.

There could be many reasons for not sleeping well, and stress often plays a role, but quite a few studies have shown that getting the right nutrients can help you get a good night's rest. Why not try eating right, before popping an Ambien?

Here's a look at three common sleep problems that have been linked to vitamin or mineral deficiencies:

Trouble getting to sleep: Magnesium plays a key role in the bodily function that regulates sleep. Insomnia is one of the symptoms of magnesium deficiency, and in fact, a 2006 analysis in the journal Medical Hypothesis suggests that such a deficiency may even be the cause of most major depression and mental health problems.

Bottom line: magnesium is an extremely important mineral. You'll find it in dark leafy greens, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds and Brazil nuts, beans and lentils and some types of fish. ?

Trouble staying asleep: Potassium supplements may be helpful to those who have trouble sleeping through the night, according to a 1991 study in the journal Sleep. Of course, although potassium is available in pill form, I prefer to get most of my nutrients directly from their sources by eating a healthy diet.

When most people think about potassium, they think bananas. Bananas do contain a fair amount of this mineral (about 10% of the daily value), but they aren't the best source. Beans, leafy greens and baked potatoes are the best sources. Avocados are a great source too ? good news for the guacamole lovers!

Tired during the day: There is a strong correlation between excessive daytime sleepiness and vitamin D deficiency, a 2012 study in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine found. The sun's rays are the best source for this vitamin, but not everyone can get the necessary sun exposure due to climate or skin cancer concerns.

There are a few food sources of vitamin D, such as swordfish, salmon, tuna and fortified foods, but this is one case where I would suggest supplementation. It's not likely that you would get enough of the sunshine vitamin from food alone.?

Thousands Of Bees Attack Texas Couple, Kill Horses

PANTEGO, Texas (AP) ? A swarm of about 30,000 bees attacked a North Texas couple as they exercised their miniature horses, stinging the animals so many times they died.

Kristen Beauregard, 44, was stung about 200 times, and her boyfriend about 50 times, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported Saturday (http://bit.ly/12RiVMA ).

But the horses, Chip and Trump, were so covered in bees they shimmered. Neither could be saved.

"They were chasing us down, they were following us," Beauregard said of the incident Wednesday evening. "We swept up piles and piles of them ... it was like a bad movie."

The bees are being tested to see whether they are Africanized or "killer" bees. It is unclear what prompted them to leave the hive.

Beauregard was exercising Trump, a Shetland pony, when he started to jump and kick, she said. That is when a cloud of bees started stinging them all over. Trying to escape, she jumped in the pool and the horse followed.

"It got all dark, like it was nighttime there were so many bees," she told the newspaper. "We were trying stand up in the water but every time we stuck our heads out for air, they would cover us and start stinging us. We were trying to breathe and they were stinging us in the face and in the nose."

She escaped to the house, and her boyfriend called 911. Bees chased her, crashing into the windows of the house. Trump ran through the yard, rubbing against bushes in an attempt to wipe off the bees.

Beauregard's boyfriend called 911 and firefighters arrived with special gear and a foam substance used to clear the bees. They were able to drag the horses to a pasture where police and paramedics tried to treat them.

Chip, a 6-year-old show horse, died before a veterinarian arrived. Trump was sedated and taken to equine veterinarian Patricia Tersteeg's clinic.

"He was so overwhelmed by bites that his body could not handle it," Tersteeg said. "That's way too much for any 250-pound mammal to survive."

The bees also killed five hens, and stung the couple's dog.

Co-founder of Russia's biggest search engine dies

MOSCOW (AP) ? Russia's largest search engine, Yandex, says its co-founder Ilya Segalovich has died. He was 48.

Yandex director general Arkady Volozh said that Segalovich died Saturday at a London hospital.

Volozh said in the company's blog that Segalovich was diagnosed with stomach cancer last year. He responded positively to chemical therapy, but then developed a brain cancer that caused his death.

Yandex announced Segalovich's death Thursday, but corrected itself within hours, saying that he was on life support with no brain function. Volozh said doctors removed life support after it became clear Segalovich couldn't be saved.

Segalovich, 48, founded Yandex in 2003 with Volozhh, his school friend. The company has been a Russian success story, with a share of 62 percent of the search engine market in Russia compared with Google's 25.6 percent.
