A Morley councillor who was conned out of ?1,000 is warning others to be on their guard against email scammers.
Coun Gareth Beevers was targeted by fraudsters who sent him a message through his phone claiming to be from technology firm Apple asking him to verify his bank details for security reasons.
Coun Beevers, who sits on Morley Town Council, believed that doing so would keep his iPhone running. But last week he noticed two transactions were pending from his Yorkshire Bank account.
He said: ?I check my bank account every day or so and I?m glad I do!
?There were two transactions, one for ?658 and another for ?374.
?I rang the bank straight away and they said it was a payment by Post Office insurance, which I had never even signed up for.?
He spoke to the bank?s fraud department and also contacted the online fraud reporting service, Action Fraud.
Luckily, his money was recovered.
He said: ?I honestly thought it was a genuine e-mail from Apple.
?I am always really careful with things like that, checking and reading them.
?These people are very clever at what they do.?
Coun Beevers contacted the company which took the money from his account and it became clear that his bank details did not match the name and address given to take out the policies, so they were cancelled.?
Since the incident, the website that the email directed people to has been shut down.
