My husband and I wanted to go on a hiking trip. We have talked about doing it for years and we finally sat down and figured out when we were going. Such things seem beyond the concerns of some of the people in Westeros, however, as noble Houses feud to seize control of the Iron Throne. Banners snap in the breeze and swords shine in sunlight as forces clash across the land. The War of Five Kings is all but over, yet conflict continues to rule in Westeros. Meanwhile, across the Narrow Sea, rumors of dragons and the liberation of slaves in the shadow of the ruined freehold of Valyria draws many to the Essos city of Meereen, as well as suitors for the hand of a queen quickly growing in legend as she struggles to maintain control over the change she?s wrought. And in the North of Westeros, on the titanic Wall that sheilds the land from the places where winter never ends, an untested leader remembers the words of the House where he was raised: Winter Is Coming?
There was some concern amongst fans before the release of A Dance With Dragons. It had been six years since the release of the previous book, A Feast For Crows. There?s also the fact that in A Feast For Crows, many of the point of view characters fans had come to love were conspicuously absent. Considering the cliffhanger way in which Martin had ended the third volume, A Storm Of Swords, it?s no wonder that many fans wondered what exactly Martin was up to. As it turns out, A Feast For Crows was merely the first half of a rather bold experiment in long-form storytelling.
Originally, Martin had intended to relate much of the story in A Feast For Crows and the first half of A Dance With Dragons as flashbacks during ?meatier? bits of his saga. However, when he realized how daunting a task that would be to relate so much story without things becoming dull, he opted to tell the stories that needed to be told more or less in real time from the perspective of the involved characters. There was apparently a lot of story to tell, as this transitionary portion of the story as told by more established characters dominates the first half of A Dance With Dragons.
However, this move means that the events that have come before, first published six years ago, now have more depth and resonance. Narrative threads that may have felt as ?left hanging? are tied into greater portions of the overall story. In other words, Martin didn?t just publish a new book. He produced a novel that some how makes his previous novel a better one and, rather than letting it remain attached like a vestigial growth, folds it neatly into his ongoing, sprawling epic. This is, in my humble opinion, nothing short of literary genius.
Typically, this is about where I?d go over what I liked and didn?t like about this book itself. However, I?d rather not betray any spoilers. I will, instead, say simply this. Martin continues to demonstrate that he is a superlative storyteller, creating characters that feel very human and deep in the midst of a fantasy world at once familiar and rather strange. His story turns are bold and his plans will keep you guessing.
I have to say that fans new to the series or who got their introduction through the HBO series Game of Thrones should pick up at least a couple of the previous books. However, if you?re already part of those that follow the saga of Westeros and anticipate the coming of winter, there is no reason not to purchase A Dance with Dragons. It?s not only a worthy addition to this sprawling series of books, it?s one of the best.

EL PASO, Texas ? Two U.S. citizens were killed during a prison fight that left 17 inmates dead and many others wounded in a municipal prison in Ciudad Juarez, across the border from El Paso, Texas.
Hector Conde, spokesman for the Cereso municipal prison, identified the dead U.S citizens as Nicolas Frias Salas, 35, a former Los Angeles resident who was in prison for homicide and unlawful possession of weapons and Luis Adrian Estrada Perez, 28, formerly of El Paso, who was serving a term for kidnapping.
Both were living in Juarez when they were sent to prison, Conde said.
Mexican authorities told the U.S. consulate in Juarez about the deaths, but it couldn't confirm the men were U.S. citizens until relatives identified the corpses, consulate spokeswoman Olga Bashbush said. The consulate has located one man's family so far and expects to release his name in the coming days, she said.
A video released by prison authorities shows how two hooded inmates got keys to different doors of the facility, opened one to release other armed inmates and then opened the door of a room where the victims were being held and shot them with automatic weapons. The attack took less than a minute.
State prosecutors in northern Chihuahua are investigating reports that inmates brought four women into the prison before the shootings and were holding a party despite prison regulations against it.
After the inmates were killed, municipal police chief Julian Leyzaola's bulletproof car was sprayed with bullets by federal policemen who had arrived at the prison moments before.
The police chief was not hurt in the shooting that a Public Safety Department statement attributed to the former Mexican Army lieutenant colonel refusing to stop at a checkpoint set up by federal police.
"For this reason, his vehicle was fired upon to make it stop," the statement said.
Known for his hard-line approach to combatting crime, Leyzaola is credited for pacifying Tijuana. He took over the job in March and promised that Juarez would be much calmer by the end of 2011. So far, there has been a 22 percent reduction in the number of murders Juarez compared to the same period last year.
It's not clear whether the drop in violence is a result of the arrival of federal police in 2010, Leyzaola's purging of the municipal police or an alleged partial truce between drug cartels.
The incident marks yet another low point in the tense relations between municipal and federal forces. In January, Juarez's mayor Hector Murguia survived a shooting between his security detail and federal police.
Mexican media reported that Murguia announced just Monday that federal police chief Facundo Rosas Rosas told him his forces would start pulling out in September.
However, the federal Interior Department issued a statement late Wednesday, saying "federal forces will not abandon Ciudad Juarez" and "federal forces ... will adjust their presence with the aim of supporting the state government in promoting greater public safety."

NEW YORK ? A heat wave that spread from the Midwest to the Northeast tormented millions of people with blasts of 100-degree temperatures and bog-like humidity as blackouts struck neighborhoods and deaths were blamed on the hot weather.
There was little hope that Saturday would bring much relief until the evening, with the National Weather Service warning of excessive heat in several states, including parts of Oklahoma, Indiana, New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. It predicted "oppressive heat" with temperatures at least in the 90s.
"It's brutal, man," Times Square T-shirt vendor Walter "Candyman" Wells, 60, said Saturday. "Usually I'm out here until 10 or 11 at night. Yesterday, I ... went home at 2:30 or 3. I couldn't handle it."
On Friday, the mercury in Newark, N.J., reached 108, the highest temperature ever recorded there. Reading, Pa., topped out at 106 degrees. Airports near Washington and Baltimore hit 105. Philadelphia reached 103, Boston 103, Portland, Maine, and Concord, N.H., 101 and Providence, R.I., 100. New York City hit 104 degrees, just 2 short of its all-time high, and with the oppressive humidity, it felt like 113.

On Friday, power supplies were stretched, and utilities were hoping that some businesses would close early for the weekend.
Con Edison in New York set a record for power demand at 1 p.m., topping a mark set Aug. 2, 2006, utility spokesman Bob McGhee said.
Several thousand New York homes and businesses were hit with blackouts, but some were quickly restored. Voltage was deliberately reduced in several neighborhoods in the city and suburbs to keep underground cables from overheating; McGhee said customers wouldn't notice.

New York Deputy Mayor Stephen Goldsmith said, "The danger isn't just the heat, it's also the heat underground. Much of our infrastructure is below ground."
"It's good in tornadoes, bad in heat," he said.
Richard Karty, who teaches urban ecology at the New School in New York City, said, "If one urban area is next to another urban area, like New York and Newark, it's just going to compound both the heat and the air pollution."

"I didn't think legs could sweat," Byrnes said.
In Manchester, Conn., the fire department sent out a vehicle to distribute cold water to road crews.
Horse races were canceled at several tracks.
But hundreds of people who lined up outside the Izod Center in Newark to audition for NBC's "The Voice" were undeterred. And in Manassas, Va., Civil War buffs said the weather ? perhaps 20 degrees hotter than in 1861 ? would not prevent a 150th-anniversary reenactment of the Battle of Bull Run.
George Alcox, 58, of Berea, Ohio, said the wool uniforms and muslin undergarments the reenactors wear are "not as hot as they look."
"They're hotter," he said.
