Text Mode Makes Web Pages Less Distracting Chrome: Great apps like Readability turn web pages into a format more easy on the eyes, but sometimes you just want less of a distraction rather than an entirely new look. Text Mode blocks out all images and flash components on a web page and puts everything into grayscale for distraction-free web browsing.

As depicted in the screenshot above, text is rendered about the same?just without color. Images, however, become a diagonal striped pattern so you can focus entirely on the written word. To activate Text Mode, you just click on the installed extension button and let it fly. To turn it off, just click the button again. The only very minor issue is that Text Mode doesn't work in Hi-DPI mode (e.g. on retina MacBook Pros and computers like them) but that won't affect the majority of users. If you're looking for a simple way to make web pages less distracting, all you need is Google Chrome and this free extension.

The votes are in for the SETI Institute's Pluto Rocks Poll, and, thanks in part to William Shatner, Mr. Spock's home planet is a clear winner.?

The votes have been tallied and the results are in from the SETI Institute?s?Pluto Rocks Poll: ?Vulcan? and ?Cerberus? have come out on top for names for Pluto?s most recently-discovered moons, P4 and P5.

After 450,324 votes cast over the past two weeks, Vulcan is the clear winner with a landslide 174,062 votes? due in no small part to a little?Twitter intervention by Mr. William Shatner,?I?m sure.

In other words??yes,?the Trekkies have won.

During a Google+ Hangout today,?SETI Institute?senior scientist Mark Showalter ? who discovered the moons and opened up the poll ? talked with SETI astronomer Franck Marchis and MSNBC?s Alan Boyle about the voting results. Showalter admitted that he wasn?t quite sure how well the whole internet poll thing would work out, but he?s pleased with the results.

?I had no idea what to expect,? said Showalter. ?As we all know the internet can be an unruly place? but by and large this process has gone very smoothly. I feel the results are fair.?

As far as having a name from the Star Trek universe be used for an actual astronomical object?

?Vulcan works,? Showalter said. ?He?s got a family tie to the whole story. Pluto and Zeus were brothers, and Vulcan is a son of Pluto.?

And what can you say when even?Mr. Spock agrees?

The other winning name, Cerberus, is currently used for an asteroid. So because the IAU typically tries to avoid confusion with two objects sharing the same exact name, Showalter said he will use the Greek version of the spelling: Kerberos.

The next step will be to submit these names to the International Astronomical Union for official approval, a process that could take 1?2 months.

(Although who knows? maybe Bill can help move that process along as well?)

What makes now potentially more compelling than 2001 and 2008 is that the fundamental reasons for investing in this sector are stronger than at any time over the last 12 years.

Here's just one example:? back in 2001, the notion of a global currency debasement war was nothing more than the fantasy of gloom and doom conspiracy theorists.? Today, the world is in the middle of a currency war that intensifies with every official pronouncement that denies its existence (see the recent G-20 statement).

I wanted to follow up on my article last week that analyzed the Comex Commitment of Traders (COT) for gold futures. I had suggested the likelihood that the recent increase in the gold futures short position of the large hedge funds, and the concomitant large reduction in the net short position of the commercial traders (mainly the bullion banks), was a signal that this vicious price correction in gold/silver is nearly over.

The COT report released Friday (through Tuesday's cut-off day) was nothing short of stunning. I knew the hedge funds were piling onto the short side of gold and silver, and that's why the metals have been getting slaughtered recklessly like this. We probably won't see an immediate "V" type move here (although I wouldn't rule it out).? The large hedge funds have no choice but to defend their massive short position.? But as the physical market off-take intensifies - India and Asia have both been buying hand-over-fist over the last week (and that's physical off-take, not fraudulent paper contracts).? But, as the impending move higher builds momentum and pushes through key technical price points, the scramble by the hedge funds and small speculators to cover their unprecedented short position will ignite a move that will be explosive.

It's gotten a bit drowned out in all the Note 8.0 fanfare, but there's another notable member of Samsung's Galaxy being shown off here at MWC 2013: the Xcover 2. Announced late this past January, the Android Jelly Bean (4.1.2) handset is a 4-inch ruggedized device made for active lifestyles. To that end, it bears IP certification for dust- and water-proofing (up to 30 minutes at a depth of one meter). Understandably, its spec load is modest, with a dual-core 1GHz processor (unspecified), 1GB RAM, 800 x 480 display, 4GB storage (expandable via microSD) and 1,700mAh battery.

Since the Xcover 2's meant to be taken outdoors, its body is rife with notches and grips -- so it won't slip out of your hand. The dimpled plastic back, similar to that on the Galaxy Nexus -- has a wrap-around illusion and can only be pried off by turning the lock at its base. Ports for microSD, SIM and 3.5mm headphone jack are all covered by protective flaps, as you'd imagine.

We couldn't get confirmation on the exact CPU inside the Xcover 2, but take our word for it: performance is sluggish. Effect any of the hard Android navigation keys on the bottom and you'll notice a bit of lag before the OS kicks into action. It's to be expected for a device of this nature -- most users eyeing the Xcover 2 likley aren't keen on top-end specs and high-performance. Samsung still hasn't clarified just where or when we'll be seeing the handset crop up, so stay tuned. In the meanwhile, check out our gallery below and brief video demo after the break.
